while i aim to produce information that could be reasonably applied to any genre of music, i am not personally an expert (yet), and thus in many cases for the benefit everyone involved it will be necessary for us to rely on information taken from expert sources, rather than basing conclusions solely on my own personal understanding of a topic from within the research process. oftentimes the information we find will be highly specific and far more useful to us in this specific form, so for the sake of explanation and clarity we will sometimes rely on genre-specific applications while attempting to translate the concepts in a universally applicable way.

before you get into the deeper info included in my guides, i would like to make it clear that there are no rules here. we are going to discuss the most commonly and clearly documented methods of achieving our goals because that is the clearest path to achieving them and because those methods will most relevant for most producers at a beginner-to-intermediate level, which is the primary group these guides are being created for.

by all means, PLEASE! for the love of god, if any of these methods feel limiting to you (and for some of you, they definitely should), take the information you’ve learned and run with it! do whatever you feel would make the best musical result for you personally in this stage of your production! that’s what being creative is all about, making your own way to do things! so i believe, anyway. the point of this guide is not to provide a rule set for creating and controlling tension and impact, but to demonstrate the various well-known methods of doing so, such that hopefully someone out there can use that understanding to inform their own unique ideas while they are producing music. that’s what i’ll be attempting to do with it myself, at least.
